Week 23 Summary (09/15/1941 - 09/21/1941)
Week Twenty-Three of the 1941 BBW Replay is in the books and while New York was able to clinch the AL pennant last week, this week St. Louis was able to clinch the NL pennant, and thus, our World Series participants are confirmed. The NL made great strides in catching up with the NL in the number of games played this past week, but as of this date no team has reached the 150 games played mark, but that won't last long.
Both World Series opponents are looking to get their players at least a few days of rest and to get their pitching rotations set up. The Yankees are expecting Charlie Keller and Red Rolfe to both return to the lineup in the next few days and both are expected to be ready to go when the World Series begins.
In the AL, Cleveland actually has the same exact replay record (73-75) that they had on this date in 1941. The difference is that Cleveland is now mired in sixth place as both St. Louis and Washington zoomed past them in the standings. After their horrible start to the season, Detroit would like to get to fifty wins, and they only need to win two of their final six to get there. Chicago still might be able to pass Boston into second place, but they need to hold off St. Louis as the Browns are trying to sneak up from behind on the Southsiders.
In the NL, New York has completed the first two of their five consecutive doubleheaders with a 3-1 record. All five of the doubleheaders are against Boston and Philadelphia, the seventh and eighth-place teams in the NL, so hopes are high for a strong finish. Brooklyn has won nine of their previous ten games, which is nice, but a little too late for challenging for the number one spot. Cincinnati has settled into a safe spot in third place between Brooklyn and New York, and Pittsburgh is still fighting for a .500 record and ended this past week one game below their goal.
Ted Williams finished the week hitting .470, thus avoiding the 'will he or won’t he" questions about whether he will hit .400 or not. You won’t be able to keep Ted off the field either way, so let's go get this final week underway.
