1941 Boston Braves |
Week Eleven of the 1941 BBW replay is in the
books, and it was another exciting and interesting week. Detroit outfielder Barney
McCosky hit for the second cycle of the season, the first having come just
last week, but the big news of the week was that Cincinnati hurler Elmer
Riddle threw a perfect game versus Philadelphia in the first game of a
doubleheader on Wednesday. Monte
Pearson followed up in Game Two with a one-hitter … a long day for the
Phillies hitters.
Week Twelve is the halfway point of the
season and is followed by a three-day All-Star break, but for now, this past
week was a bit of a topsy-turvy one. The Yankees got swept in a three-game
series at home by St. Louis, the second-place White Sox ended their week by
losing three games in Cleveland, the Indians had fallen into fourth place
behind Boston but are now tied for second, and the Red Sox couldn’t hold on to
third place and are now seeing St. Louis in their rearview mirror, the Browns
are currently working on a seven-game winning streak and are 2.0 games behind
Boston, the Nationals cooled off a bit this past week but are still within
striking distance of St. Louis, the A's lost five in a row but are still well
ahead of Detroit, and the Tigers had gone on a bit of a roll only recently only
to end the week with three losses to the Big Brown Machine from St. Louis.

In the NL, the Cardinals got Johnny Mize
back in the lineup and were hoping to extend their lead, only to lose both ends
of a doubleheader on Sunday to Cincinnati, but second-place Brooklyn was unable
to capitalize on the St. Louis losses because they were getting swept in a
doubleheader by last lace Boston. Cincinnati had quite the week with a perfect
game and a one-hitter in a doubleheader against Philadelphia in mid-week and their
wins versus St. Louis on Sunday, but they needed all those wins to hold off
the charging Giants who are now in fourth place. New York has won eight of
their last ten games and was able to pass Pittsburgh and are sitting 1.0 games
behind the Reds, the Pirates are moving down towards the Cubs but should be
able to rebound, while Chicago still has trouble scoring runs, but they are well
ahead of Philadelphia, who opens this new week by being only 0.5 games ahead of eighth-place Boston.
Through Sunday's games, Joe
DiMaggio's 1941 hitting streak had reached 42 games. In the replay, his
on-base streak had reached 68 games, no small feat in itself. DiMaggio is still
second in the AL in hitting at .399, still well behind Ted
Williams (.488). These two are both having quite a season, but the Red Sox
are sitting a full 12.0 games behind the first-place Yankees.
