Week 7 Summary (05/26/1941 - 06/01/1941)

Week Seven of the 1941 BBW replay is in the books and it was quite a week. Friday (May 30) was Memorial Day and there were eight doubleheaders as everybody got in two games. Saturday was a travel day, followed by another doubleheader extravaganza and there was a total of six doubleheaders on Sunday (June 1). All that, and yes, the season has moved into the month of June. All the AL teams have reached the 40-games-played mark while in the NL there are three teams who haven't reached 40 yet, but it won’t be much longer.

The doubleheaders played this week did cause some churn in the daily standings, but at the end of the week, there really wasn't much change. Cleveland took two from Chicago and moved into second place in the AL, but then they lost two to New York and moved right back into third. St. Louis and Brooklyn are continuing their dogfight for first place in the NL but losing two games in one day to their crosstown rivals in New York didn’t really help their cause. The Giants have gone 8-2 over their last ten games and have been able to move out of last place all the way up to fifth, but that is really more of a function of their three teams beneath them having their own struggles.

Detroit's struggles in the AL continue unabated. They had advanced to the World Series in 1940, losing in seven games to Cincinnati, and in 1941 they finished tied for fourth (with Cleveland) with a 75-79 record. They are currently sitting on single digits in wins (eight) with 45 games played (8-37, .178), meaning they would have to finish 67-42 (.615) to duplicate that record. I expect they will improve in the final two-thirds of the season, but I think that winning percentage might be out of reach.

Mostly, they have just been snakebit so far in this replay. If they get good pitching, someone else is better. If they should hit, they get outscored. They don’t get enough hitting - they are essentially tied with the White Sox at the bottom in the hitting department, but the White Sox lead the AL in ERA. The Tigers team ERA (6.11) is a full run worse than the seventh-place Browns (5.00). I do think the dice rolls will start to even out for the Tigers before long, but wow, this has been quite a miserable stretch.

Ted Williams is still hitting over .500 (.522), while Joe DiMaggio is second in AL batting (.399). The Yankees have been tenacious so far. They may lose a couple of games, but then they turn right around and go on another tear. They continually get good pitching and their lineup is packed, so someone is always ready to step up and be the hitting hero for the day. DiMaggio's 54-game hitting streak is currently sitting at 17 games and there hasn't been much hubbub about it yet - Williams is at 19 at the same point - but all that is about to change.

There are quite a few off days for teams this coming week, but this coming Sunday will feature a total of six doubleheaders on the docket, with the completion of Week Eight marking the one-third completion point of the replay. There is still plenty of baseball yet to be played, so let's go see what happens.
